HISTORIQUE : Plus rare que les trois autres races de Bergers Belges, le Groenendael, le Malinois et le Tervueren, il s’en distingue surtout par une apparence plus rustique. Créé au 19e siècle, il fut le favori de la Reine Henriette qui résidait au château de Laeken dont il a hérité du nom. Il est surtout utilisé comme chien de travail.

ASPECT GÉNÉRAL : Le Laekenois est un chien médioligne, harmonieusement proportionné, alliant élégance et puissance. De taille moyenne, le mâle flirte avec les 62 cm, la femelle 58 cm, pour un poids de 28 à 35 kg. Le Laekenois a une musculature sèche qui lui permet une grande rapidité et une détente extraordinaire.

COMPORTEMENT/CARACTÈRE : Le Laekenois est un chien vigilant et actif, débordant de vitalité et toujours prêt à passer à l’action. A l’aptitude innée de gardien de troupeaux, il joint les précieuses qualités du meilleur chien de garde pour la propriété. Il est, sans nulle hésitation, l’opiniâtre et ardent défenseur de son maître. Il réunit toutes les qualités requises pour être un chien de berger, de garde, de défense et de service. Son tempérament vif et alerte et son caractère assuré, sans aucune crainte ni agressivité, doivent être visibles dans l’attitude du corps et l’expression fière et attentive de ses yeux étincelants. On tiendra compte du caractère « calme » et « hardi » dans les jugements.

HISTORY: The Belgian Laeken is considered both the oldest and the most rare of the four types of Belgian Shepherd Dogs. Its wiry coat gives it a distinctive and unique appearance. The name is derived from the Castle Laeken of Belgium where the royal family first took notice of the breed and it eventually became the favourite of Queen Marie Henriette. The Belgian Laeken is heavily utilized for herding, guarding, and rescue work.

GENERAL APPEARANCE: The first impression of the Belgian Laeken is that of a square, well-balanced dog, elegant in appearance, with an exceedingly proud carriage of the head and neck. It is a strong, agile, well-muscled animal, alert, and full of life. Its movements are light, brisk and tireless. The size and stature of the Belgian Laeken is very similar to that of the other Belgian Sheepdogs, measuring 22 to 26 inches in height and weighing 55 to 65 pounds.

BEHAVIOUR/TEMPERAMENT: The Belgian Laeken Shepherd is a watchful and active dog, bursting with energy, and always ready to leap into action. As well as its innate skill at guarding flocks, it also possesses the highly prized qualities of the best guard dog for property. It is a stubborn and keen protector of its owner, reacting without hesitation. It embodies all the necessary qualities required in a shepherd, guard, defence and service dog. Its lively, alert temperament and its confident nature, showing no fear or aggressiveness, should be obvious in its body stance and in the proud attentive expression in its sparkling eyes. When judging this breed, one should take into consideration its calm and fearless temperament.
